As a percentage of GDP, government debt increased to 54.3%, up from 54% in October (GDP according to the National Institute of Statistics release of December 6, 2024).
In November 2024, medium and long-term debt fell to RON 866.27 billion from RON 869.21 billion in October, while short-term debt increased to RON 70.72 billion from RON 61.97 billion in the previous month.
The bulk of this debt, RON 772.92 billion, was government securities. Borrowing amounted to RON 143.42 billion.
The debt in national currency amounted to RON 446.82 billion, that in euro to RON 391.01 billion equivalent and the debt in US dollars to RON 96.93 billion equivalent.
Also, the central government debt in November 2024 reached RON 914.05 billion, up from RON 908.31 billion in October, of which RON 843.37 billion medium and long-term. Most of the central government debt was contracted in lei (RON 428.86 billion) and in euro (RON 386.04 billion equivalent).
Local government debt rose to RON 22.94 billion from RON 22.87 billion in the previous month, of which RON 22.89 billion medium and long-term.
At the same time, general government domestic debt in November 2024 amounted to RON 463.77 billion (RON 455.71 billion in October), or 26.9% of GDP (26.4% of GDP in October 2024), of which RON 445.9 billion was central government debt and RON 17.86 billion local government debt.
According to MF data, the general government external debt amounted to RON 473.22 billion (RON 475.47 billion in the previous month), or 27.4% of GDP (27.6% of GDP in the previous month), of which RON 468.14 billion was central government external debt and RON 5.07 billion was local government external debt.
