The Doicești site was pre-selected following a complex expert analysis conducted by Nuclearelectrica under a $1.2 million grant from the USTDA in 2021 to identify and evaluate potential sites for Small Modular Reactors. This research involved the evaluation of several potential sites, and the former Doicești thermal power plant site met a substantial number of eligibility criteria, including those related to safety, but also in terms of existing infrastructure for further project development.
“We are happy to see that Doicești SMR Site is fully compliant with IAEA highest safety standards, as this represents an important step forward in the SMR Project and its implementation. We trust that the opportunity to develop the SMR technology in Romania will bring a high number of benefits in terms of developing Romania's nuclear industry and diversifying its low-carbon energy sources, while also bringing local advantages, opening a new industry in Dâmbovița County, and creating thousands of jobs for locals and specialists”, says Teofil Mureșan, E-INFRA CEO and Chairman.
The SMR Project in Doicești is developed by RoPower Nuclear, the project company created specifically for the first safe, clean, and reliable deployment of an SMR power plant in Romania.
