Survey: Romanians want energy efficient homes, but struggle with financing

A recent study has revealed that energy efficiency investments remain out of reach for many Romanian households.

While a significant proportion (44%) of Romanians are considering investing in energy efficiency projects this year, they face financial challenges when trying to improve the energy performance of their homes, according to research conducted for despre-energie.ro, a platform backed by E.ON and Delgaz Grid.

Nearly half (48.6%) of those surveyed plan to use their own savings for such investments, while 13.5% intend to take out bank loans. A considerable number (29%) hope to access government subsidy programmes.

However, a notable 8.8% believe such projects are too expensive. Overall, half of those surveyed feel that low incomes are a major deterrent to undertaking energy efficiency projects. This financial strain is a key factor, with 20.6% stating they will not make such investments this year, and over 35% still undecided.

For those looking to invest, thermal insulation is a priority for 34.5%, while 26% are interested in photovoltaic systems, and 15% plan to replace old appliances with more energy-efficient models.

The online survey had a sample of 1,116 respondents and was carried out this year, between February 19-25.
