SelfPay, Romania's self-service payment station market leader, recorded an exceptional financial performance last year, marked by a substantial increase in the company's net profit and EBITDA. At the same time, the company accelerated the development of the SelfPay Now mobile app, making significant strides toward transforming it into a super app, with a considerable increase in user numbers.
Thus, for 2024, the company reported a net profit of RON 32.2 million, nearly triple the result recorded in 2023 (RON 10.8 million). This growth reflects both the continuous expansion of the SelfPay Payment Station network and the increasing adoption of the company's digital solutions.
From an operational perspective, EBITDA also saw a strong increase, rising from RON 20.4 million in 2023 to RON 45.4 million in 2024 (up 122.5% from the previous year).
The data are currently unaudited. The final results will be reported by the company to the Bucharest Stock Exchange at the end of April 2025. SelfPay SA has been listed on the stock market since 2021, following a corporate bond issuance maturing in 2026.
The SelfPay Now app records exponential usage growth
A key factor for last year's positive results were the results of the SelfPay Now mobile app, which integrates a host of innovative features: the Cash Deposit feature, a first in Europe, which allows users to deposit cash onto their bank cards in real-time, offering instant money transfers (both between users' cards and a single user's own cards) and an open banking implementation that allows users to check their balance and transaction history. At the same time, the SelfPay Now app also operates as an integrated service hub facilitating the free payment of local taxes and utility bills.
Thus, the total number of app users grew by 113.8% in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching approximately 604,000 in 2024.
Similarly, the number of transactions processed through the app rose significantly, from 1.5 million in 2023 to 3.3 million in 2024 (+113.4%).
The total value of transactions processed through the app also saw an impressive increase, approaching the one-billion-lei mark (912 million lei, up 98.7% in 2024 compared to 2023).
At the end of February 2025, SelfPay Now will celebrate three years since its official launch, a milestone highlighting the app's maturity and strength in the digital services market.
“These results substantiate our business strategy focused on developing the SelfPay payment solutions ecosystem, which supports financial inclusion and the convergence of cash and electronic payments,” said Adrian Badea, SelfPay SA CEO.
“We are particularly excited about the growth of the SelfPay Now app, which now provides users access to over 200 payment services for bills and local taxes, along with essential functionalities such as cash deposits and real-time money transfers, in full compliance with state-of-the-art security protocols. In addition to expanding our physical presence through the growth of our Payment Station network, we will continue investing in the development of our digital ecosystem. This includes transforming SelfPay Now into a true ‘super-app' capable of seamlessly integrating digital solutions into users' routines, offering a complete experience beyond simple payment facilitation.”
Expansion of the network and growth in total transaction volume
During the same period, the SelfPay Payment Station network continued its significant expansion, reaching 12,000 units in 2024, compared to approximately 10,700 in 2023.
The development of the Payment Stations' footprint has supported an increasing volume of transactions processed through the company's terminals: thus, the total number of transactions exceeded 43 million in 2024 (+19.5% over 2023).
The total value of transactions processed by SelfPay grew by 27.9% in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching €1.35 billion.
Strong Revenue Growth
The company's revenue also grew significantly and consistently over the past year, reflecting the expansion of the number of payment services and features offered, as well as the increasing adoption rate of the SelfPay Now app, from RON 184.9 million in 2023 to RON 236.1 million in 2024 (+27.7%).
