Six in ten Romanians plan energy efficiency investments

Over 87% of Romanians have applied energy reduction measures in recent months at their homes or businesses, while more than 60% are interested in investing in energy efficiency projects next year to achieve comfort and reduce energy bills, according to research conducted for the despre-energie.ro platform, a project by E.ON and Delgaz Grid companies.

About 70% of respondents say they have already taken simple measures such as optimal heating system settings, turning off lights in unused rooms, or opting for LED lighting, which brings savings compared to incandescent or fluorescent bulbs and has a longer lifespan. Only 16% have invested in purchasing and installing photovoltaic panels, with or without storage batteries.

Regarding financial resources for future energy efficiency investments, over 58% of Romanians say they will use their own savings, while 12% will turn to bank loans. Nearly 30% of respondents hope to access state-funded programmes such as Casa Verde Fotovoltaice.

When asked about the top priority for having an energy-efficient home, 43% of respondents consider replacing old appliances with those having higher energy classes as the best solution. Another 20% say thermal insulation of the home and replacing the heating system with a condensing boiler are the most advantageous measures. A condensing boiler is more efficient than a conventional one, consuming up to 30% less gas, with higher efficiency and longer lifespan.

Bill savings represent the main motivation for 75% of Romanians regarding energy efficiency measures, while 13% mention increased comfort, and nearly 10% express environmental concerns. Half of respondents estimate that after applying energy efficiency measures, bill values could decrease by 20-40%, while a quarter expect reductions under 20%. "Whether we talk about behaviour change regarding energy use or investments for obtaining an energy-efficient home, the final goals are achieving increased comfort and reducing energy bills," the study concludes.
