OMV Petrom delivers first green hydrogen module to Petrobrazi

Business Forum
Oil major OMV Petrom has delivered the first electrolyser module for green hydrogen production at its Petrobrazi refinery, marking progress in the 20 MW green hydrogen project.

The module will be installed and connected to the power network to enable production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).

"Starting the delivery of the modules for the 20 MW green hydrogen capacity marks a step in transforming the Petrobrazi refinery into the largest sustainable fuel production hub in the region, contributing to Romania's NRRP targets," said Radu Căprău, Member of the OMV Petrom Executive Board. The green hydrogen will support production of SAF and HVO, fuels for low-emission mobility.

The remaining three modules of the 20 MW project will be delivered in the coming months. Equipment is supplied by Neuman & Esser from Germany, while site construction and integration are carried out by Kraftanlagen Romania with local suppliers. The plant will produce approximately 3,000 tons of green hydrogen annually and benefits from around €21 million in non-reimbursable PNRR funds.

The broader SAF/HVO programme involves total investments of €750 million: €560 million for the SAF/HVO unit construction and €190 million for two green hydrogen production facilities. The new unit will have annual capacity of 250,000 tons, with production planned to start in 2028.

The two green hydrogen projects will have total installed capacity of 55 MW and annual production of around 8,000 tons. These will produce sustainable fuels from vegetable and used cooking oils that can reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 65% over the entire economic cycle. The hydrogen will be produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources.
