Romania's energy production drops 2.1% in early 2026

Romania's domestic energy production fell 2.1% in the first two months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In the first two months, primary energy resources decreased 1.2%, while electricity resources grew 2.8% compared to the same period in 2025. Primary energy resources totalled 5.274 million tonnes oil equivalent (toe), down 62,400 toe, while domestic production reached 2.688 million toe, falling 56,500 toe. Imports stood at 2.586 million toe, declining 5,900 toe.

Electricity resources reached 12.138 billion kWh, up 326.2 million kWh year-on-year. Thermal power plant production dropped to 3.484 billion kWh, falling 240.6 million kWh. Hydroelectric production increased significantly to 2.497 billion kWh, rising 796.6 million kWh, while nuclear power generation reached 1.878 billion kWh, down 61.3 million kWh.

Wind power production grew to 1.361 billion kWh, increasing 351.4 million kWh, while solar energy from photovoltaic installations generated 323.2 million kWh, declining 36.2 million kWh.

Final electricity consumption totalled 8.783 billion kWh, down 0.8% compared to January-February 2025. Economic consumption increased 0.3%, public lighting rose 2.9%, while household consumption decreased 4.4%. Electricity exports reached 2.122 billion kWh, up 155.9 million kWh.
