The agreement marks a significant step following the Romanian Ministry of Defense's award of the contract to Otokar for 1,059 armored vehicles in November 2024.
Deliveries are set to start in Q4 2025 and will be completed over a five-year period. The first 278 vehicles will be delivered directly from Turkey, while the rest will be manufactured locally, in Mediaș.
The JV will not only focus on producing Cobra II 4x4 ATBTU armored vehicles but also on conducting engineering, marketing, and after-sales services within the country.
Aykut Özüner, Otokar CEO, commented on the agreement: “This step will be one of the main milestones in Otokar's growth strategy in the defense industry, contributing to our company's expansion in global markets."
Andrei Scobioala, Chairman of Automecanica, added: “Our unwavering commitment to this project leaves no room for doubt—this partnership will be a key driver in advancing Romania's local defense capabilities."
The project stems from a tender initiated by C.N. Romtehnica in March 2024, for the purchase of 4x4 Light Armored Tactical Vehicles. Otokar emerged as the winner, leading to the signing of a RON 4.26 billion (€854 million) multiannual contract with the Romanian Ministry of Defense.
