Carrefour Romania launches first intelligent shopping cart system

Business Forum
Carrefour Romania has launched the country's first intelligent shopping cart system, at its Corbeanca hypermarket.

The Smart Cart offers a range of features designed to optimize the shopping process. Customers can authenticate through the Act for Good loyalty platform in the Carrefour mobile app.

Once logged in, they can create their shopping list directly on the cart's touchscreen, which then automatically generates an optimized route through the store, indicating the location of each product.

As items are scanned, their price and details are instantly displayed on the screen, providing real-time visibility of the shopping cart's total value.

For added convenience, a dedicated button allows customers to request assistance, with a geolocalisation function enabling staff to quickly pinpoint their exact location. Upon completion of shopping, it generates a barcode for quick scanning at the cash register, automatically transferring all added products to the system for rapid payment.

Fabrice Gratien Besson, Security, Quality and Cash Director at Carrefour Romania, stated: "We launched this pilot project in the Corbeanca hypermarket with 40 devices, and since its debut, over 3,500 customers have already used Smart Cart, demonstrating the increased interest in this system that makes shopping faster and more efficient. We believe this is the beginning of an important transformation, where technology and the in-store experience work together."

The carts have a carrying capacity of up to 180 kg, an 18-hour battery life, and a 6-hour charging time, ensuring continuous usability throughout the day.  Furthermore, Smart Cart is compatible with delivery platforms like Bringo and Glovo.
