FlixBus Romania hits 300,000 domestic passengers milestone

Business Forum
Eight months after Romania liberalised intercounty transport, FlixBus reports over 600,000 passengers have used its national and international routes, with more than 300,000 travelling domestically between July 2025 and February 2026.

The most popular domestic destinations include Constanța, Craiova, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, and Timișoara. Company data shows growing demand for domestic travel, particularly on routes connecting major cities and tourist destinations, driven by competitive pricing and service diversification.

According to Eurostat data from 2024, only 28% of Romanians took at least one personal tourism trip, compared to the EU average of 65.4%. However, Romania shows the fastest growth in travel within the EU, with abroad travel increasing 62.2% and domestic tourism growing over 20%.

Michał Leman, Vice President FlixBus Eastern Europe added that Romania needs more affordable transport, with regulatory frameworks enabling better bus station access and increased frequency during peak seasons.

Most domestic bookings are made online through the mobile app and digital platform, though passengers can also buy physical tickets from partner agencies or Self Pay stations. Romania has 17 airports with potential for intermodal connections, though current regulations separate intercounty routes from airport transfers. FlixBus has operated in Romania since 2018, connecting over 80 cities with 16 European countries through partnerships with local operators.
