Sofmedica Group at 30 years of activity: over €55 million invested in the region

Business Forum
This year, the Sofmedica Group celebrates three decades of innovation in the healthcare industry. Founded in 1994, the Group is active in six European countries:  Romania, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and most recently, Croatia. Since its inception, the Sofmedica Group has invested over €55 million in the region. Over the years, the organization has expanded significantly, with an estimated turnover of €70 million in 2024.

The Group remains steadfast in its mission to empower the industry standards and to support the healthcare professionals by providing them with the tools, training and technology they need to deliver exceptional care, especially in an ever-changing landscape. To date, more than €7 million has been invested in developing comprehensive educational programs tailored for healthcare professionals.

The Group has solidified its position as a pioneer by building an entire ecosystem at the service of the healthcare professionals in the region through the deployment of innovative educational programs on the one hand and the development of top-notch medical real estate on the other. This holistic approach has enabled the Group to achieve numerous medical firsts in the region:  the introduction of therapies such as home dialysis, left ventricular assist devices (artificial heart), robotically assisted surgery, capsule video-endoscopy, and transcatheter valve replacement. These achievements underscore the Group's commitment to making the most advanced medical solutions accessible to the remotest patients in Europe.

“What began as an ambition to facilitate access to high-end medical technology in Romania has evolved into a mission to transform the delivery of healthcare in an entire region composed already by six EU countries – for one hospital, one physician and one patient at a time. As we look back, we tend to measure our success not so much by the technologies we've introduced, but by the lives of people – healthcare professionals and patients - we've touched,” Georgios Sofianos, CEO, Sofmedica Group

By focusing on early and precise diagnosis of life-threatening diseases all the way to treating them through the most advanced surgical techniques, the Sofmedica Group has consistently strived to prioritize what matters most, the patients.

Sofmedica Group's growth has been sustained through a strategic focus on financial discipline, quality management, and compliance governance, but also commitment to reliability and long-term partnerships. Investing in these areas of focus, although resource-intensive in the short term, has been essential in shaping the company culture.

“We see the future as a time when digital and robotic solutions will evolve from being innovative pathways to becoming the standard of care, accelerating access to diagnosis and therapy. Our focus remains on building reliable partnerships by fostering collaboration across sectors and borders, keeping in mind the patient as the utmost final beneficiary. By driving these advancements, we aim not just to deliver cutting-edge technology but to transform the entire healthcare ecosystem, ensuring that the best care is available to as many, empowering professionals and uplifting communities," Georgios Sofianos, CEO, Sofmedica Group

Looking ahead, Sofmedica Group aims to build on its legacy by focusing on digital health innovations, expanding into new regions, enhancing its presence throughout the patient journey and maintaining an integrated approach to healthcare. The Group plans to boost patient care by incorporating AI and data-driven technologies into clinical workflows, optimizing operating rooms and integrating genetic diagnostics into treatment plans. By offering solutions across the full spectrum of patient needs, from early diagnosis to recovery and through strategic partnerships with healthcare systems, the Group will continue to amplify its impact while upholding high standards in modern healthcare delivery.

With direct operations in Romania, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia & Cyprus, the group aims to build a comprehensive regional ecosystem comprised of five distinct but complementary business lines: Sofmedica – Innovative Medical Technology, Isle Academy – Lifelong Learning & Credentialing for Healthcare Professionals, Emerald & Astrea – Personalized Medicine through Genetics & Precise Diagnosis, Medcity - Healthcare Real Estate, Sofmedica Ventures - HealthTech Development.
